Tree Planting Activity at Mt. Cristobal/Banahaw with Haribon Foundation

Philweb Corporation conducted a tree planting once again as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility. Haribon Foundation, the Philweb's partner for this activity is so thankful for Philweb's initiative towards their ROAD (Rainforest Organizations and Advocates) to 2020 Movement.

The ROAD to 2020's goal is to restore 1 million hectares of Philippine rainforest by planting native trees. This is to sustain provision of ecological goods and services by year 2020 through an informed and engaged public.

I once again volunteered to join the tree planting of Philweb for the 3rd time. I thought I was going to miss the activity because of my work. Good thing I was assigned on a graveyard shift to support the deployment. I know it's gonna be a sleepless night because I'm going to work after the activity all over the night, but it's okay as it is for nature.

We're only 15 people who joined the activity. Some of our colleagues are too busy especially my teammates who are in-charge to support the deployment on day-shift. We just strongly believe that we're going to plant all the 1000 trees within the day. We departed in Alphaland Southgate Tower at 5 o'clock in the morning after having our breakfast.

We arrived just in time in the meet-up place. We met the Haribon staffs, Ms. Bianca Osorio and Thaddeus Martinez and then we rode additional 45 minutes going to Mt. Cristobal. While on our way, I couldn't help myself staring at Mt. Cristobal and Mt. Banahaw. They're both stunning to see.

When we arrived at Mt. Cristobal, there are military men and people from the community who are going to help us since we're outnumbered. We had a little discussion about the goals of ROAD to 2020 with Sir Thad and then proceed to the tree planting area.

Before I proceed, I would like to explain why Haribon insisted to plant native trees rather than exotic tress. That is because the roots of native trees could strongly hold the soil than exotic trees. However, the exotic trees are easy to grow but it's not good for a rainforest because of the toxic it brings to the soil. That's what I understand since the tree planting in Buhay Punlaan.

Note: Don't forget to bring gloves. And please give it to the community after planting. They can reuse it.

We hiked up in about 45 minutes. I thought it's going to be a super easy climb, but it was a normal hiking for me with a short period of time. Lots of assaults and the soil is quite loose. Some of my co-workers had a hard time reaching the area, but they made it. I was so busy days before the activity, and spending time with nature on that day really freed my mind.

We immediately planted trees together with the community and military men. All the seedlings are already beside the hole that why it's easy for us to plant them. I was enjoying while planting, The more I plant trees, the more happy I am. After more than an hour, we're done. I was like not satisfied and I felt like we didn't plant 800 seedlings, but yes we're done.

It's a privilege to be part of the activity, I really had fun. Getting in touch with nature is always a good idea. It relieves stress and let me forget about my work for awhile (though my boss was calling me because of a system error).

I believe it would benefit the future, for our future children and grandchildren. We have an obligation to take care of the nature. Not only the environmentalist, naturalist, but all of us. Trees can save lives as it prevents soil erosion, make us to breathe fresh air, etc. And please take note that nature doesn't need people, people need nature.

I'm hoping for the success of ROAD to 2020 project of Haribon Foundation. I hope many other companies will contribute for the Haribon's goal and make this happen. I'm looking forward to see the trees I planted and see the result of what I've done.

We had a side trip in Tayak Hill. The place is awesome. Perfect for family bonding.

For lunch, we went in Palmeras Garden Restaurant in San Pablo City. Their food is really great for a tiring activity.
